Dragonflies with Gold Inner Wings |
 |
|
Widow Skimmer dragonflies (Libellula Luctuosa)
have a very unique wing pattern which differentiates
them from other dragonfly species. Its beautiful
brownish-blue skimmer body and the curvy black
color pattern on their wings extends over
half of each wing followed by a bluish-white
to light-pink outer stripe and the occasional darkening
at the wing-tips.
Distribution of the Widow
Skimmer is widespread throughout most of North
America and Mexico. Its habitat includes wetlands,
pools, ponds, lakes and wet ditches. Widow Skimmers
can be seen near ponds when they are mating. They
will fly in tandem with the male grasping the female
behind the eyes, near the back of the head. After
mating the male releases the female and hovers
over her while she dips her abdomen onto the surface
of the water to deposit her fertile eggs. Widow
dragonflies are found at the silt-bottom of freshwater
ponds and in sandy stream side pools where the
nymphs emerge onto adjacent grass and transform
into dragonflies just a few feet from their future
adult life habitat.
A beautiful natural display
can be made using silk horsetail reed grass
with other floral's since the Widow Skimmer spends
most of its time near a pond perching on water
plants and on the ground. Having four Widow Skimmer
Dragonflies in your home out on display
as a centerpiece will amaze and impress
your family and friends when they next visit. By
creating a dragonfly display in your workplace
you will be providing a very relaxing ambience
that fellow workers and clients can enjoy.
Putting any of our electronic
moving dragonflies or butterflies in your lobby
will add a nice touch that your quests will appreciate
to ease their waiting time. |
