Amazing Moth:
Madagascan
Sunset |
 |
|
The Madagascan Sunset Moth (Urania riphaeus),
a.k.a. Chrysiridia Madagascariensis or the Malagasy
lepidoptera, is a very colorful species that belongs
to the family Uraniidae which are day-flying moths
that are easily confused with swallowtail
butterflies (Papilionidae). Sunset Moths are large
for moths and unlike most they are active during
the daylight hours. Their known food plants are
privet, rhododendron, Ailanthus. The Uraniidae
family is native to Madagascar and South America.
It is one of the most colorful of the Lepidoptera
order and a favorite amongst butterfly and moth
collectors alike. With pigmented scales on its
wings, Sunset Moths have submicroscopic structures
varied enough to reflect different wavelengths
throughout the light spectrum. Sunset Moths have
been described as "one of
the most colorful and beautiful creatures in the
world" along with Blue Morpho Butterflies
(Peleides Hyacinthus) which is probably why both
are used extensively for framed insect collections,
jewelry and artwork.
