Blue
Dragonfly: 4 Little Blue Dragonlets |
 |
|
In nature, there are very few dragonflies as
small as the Little Blue Dragonlet (Erythrodiplax
minuscula) where they can be about one
inch in length and its no wonder that both the
first and the last words in the common name refer
to its smallness. Little Blue Dragonlets may be
tiny but their species is widespread and ranges
from the South Eastern U.S. to Canada where it
can be found at vegetated ponds and backwaters.
People often confuse the Dragonlet with Elfin
Skimmers, Blue Corporals or Shrunken Blue
Dashers which are also tiny and blue, but differ
in abdomen shape, color of their heads, pterostigmas,
and abdomen tips. Blue
Dragonlets can generally be distinguished in the
field by its Eastern distribution
and the distinctive powder blue pruinose appearance
that is found in older individuals. This blue dragonfly
is often fodder for larger dragons and this is
especially so for the voracious and omnivorous
Pondhawk.
Young
males and females are greenish-brown or olivaceous
and the front of their thorax is devoid of stripes
and is darker than their sides.
Four brilliantly
blue colored dragonflies with
independent moving wings will liven
up any coffee table, home environment, or special
event. A beautiful natural display can be creating
by placing four Little Blue Dragonlets on silk
horsetails and moss since Little Blue
Dragonlets spends most of their time near ponds
landing and taking off of water plants and perches
low on grasses. You'll love
the innovative realistic designs of our electronic
moving dragonflies! |
