Butterfly:
Swallowtail, Old World 3-Set |
 |
|
Old World Swallowtail butterflies (Papilio machaon
Linnaeus) are one of the most recognized and easy
to identify of all butterfly species. This
multicolor beauty of a butterfly has a reddish-orange
and blue eyespot on the upper side of its hind
wings near each tail with black along the lower
border on the lower edge of hind wing, but not
overlapping the eyespot. Swallowtails are found
mostly on the tops of hills, mountain
meadows, sub arctic, boreal, Northern prairie habitats,
tundra and badlands in North America, South Alaska,
British Colombia and Quebec South throughout New
Mexico and it is the only Swallowtail with circumpolar
range. On the edges of cliffs there can be up to
a dozen or more males on a typical day fighting
over a position of dominance so that, when the
females to wander past they are in there waiting.
Once female Swallowtails are fertilized
they lay eggs singly on the leaves of their host
plant so that the caterpillars will have a whole
leave to consume immediately upon hatching from
the egg. As adults Swallowtail butterflies will
feed on flower nectar.
