These very popular dragonflies have distinctive
bright yellow and black wings. The Halloween Pennant
(Celithemis Eponina) have black and yellow stripes
on its thorax and dual pairs of wings and the eyes
are a very beautiful dark reddish brown. In adult
males, colored rectangular spots on the front edge
of each wing (pterostigmata), become red near the
tip. This species is most often encountered in
fields adjacent to ponds. It seems to prefer landing
on the tips of the tallest grasses where it balances
itself in perfect horizontal position. The front
wings are often held at an angle above the body
as it rests or is trying to dry out its wings.
