Golden Winged Skimmers (Libellula auripennis)
are similar to the Needham's skimmer which is found
near the coast. Golden Winged dragonflies have
their habitat around grassy ponds and lakes. When
disturbed this dragonfly species behaves as most
others would and flies away then usually returns
right back to the same exact location. Skimmers
are also generally the primary dragonfly to colonize
a new pond or neglected swimming pool. This type
of skimmer ranges from Virginia to Florida and
inland to the midwest and can also be found in
many other eastern states. With a shorter wingspan
than other skimmers its wings often have red bands
or spots and brightly colored bodies. Having four
of these brilliantly colored golden dragonflies
with their wings moving independently will liven
up any natural display in your home or office.
