| The Halloween Pennant (Celithemis eponia)
(also called the Brown-Spotted Yellow-wing) of
the Family Libellulidae is a medium sized dragonfly
which occurs across most of the eastern U.S. It
is a striking dragonfly, one of the most beautiful
in the country and is easily identified in the
field by the yellow and black color and pattern
of the wings. Halloween Pennants are the largest
of the small pennants they are widespread in North
America, east of the Rockies. Males and females
similar in appearance except the male has more
color than female. On hot days, these dragonfly
wings with black and yellow strips are often seen
perched on the tip of tall vegetation in an obelisk
stance or horizontal position with its wings and
abdomen held up (a posture employed by some skimmers
- such as the Blue Dasher and Eastern Amberwing
- and clubtails, to regulate temperature). Halloween
Pennant (Celithemis eponia) like some other dragonflies
are really fun to watch, once one picks a perch,
it seems determined to stay with that particular
perch even when disturbed it will keep coming
back to the same perch!
