| The unique black and yellow tiger stripes
on the wings of the Halloween Pennant dragonfly
(Celithemis Eponina) makes this dragonfly hard
to miss. Dragonflies have been here for a very
long time, in fact the dragonfly has been around
before the dinosaurs, over 300 million years ago,
and ancient dragonflies were considerably larger
than those we see today. The biggest insect that
ever lived was an ancient dragonfly Meganeura,
a predatory insect with a wing span of over two
feet. Other than being smaller, modern-day dragonflies
do not look very different from their ancestors.
The Halloween Pennant is common in the eastern
U.S. and enjoys ponds with weedy bottoms. They
often perch on the tips of tall weeds, and then
allow the wind to carry them much like butterflies.
There is speculation that their wing color may
be an emulation of the Monarch butterfly, which
is poisonous to predators.
