| The term "butterfly" came from
the old English metathesis of "flutterby" and "buttorfleoge" -
a similar word which occurs in Dutch and
is apparently connect to the fact that they
suspected butterflies of stealing milk. Scientifically
speaking, a butterfly is a primarily day
flying insect of the order Lepidoptera (meaning
scale-winged) belonging to one of the super
families Hesperioidea (the skippers) or Papilionoidea
(all other "higher butterflies").
The most authoritative classifications of
butterfly families are based upon the distinct
peculiarities of their wing venation. Most
species of butterflies have characteristic
slender bodies, knobbed antennae, and four
broad wings with striking colors and patterns.
Butterflies are known for remarkably beautiful
membranous wings that are covered with myriads
of tiny scales that overlap one another like
the shingles on the roof of a house. Each
wing shows a near infinite variety of hues
produced by the colorations of their minute
scales and their arrangement on the translucent
membrane that runs between the wing and its
circulatory veins. |
