Swallowtail
butterflies are the official state butterflies
of many different states in the US. The Eastern
Tiger Swallowtail is the state butterfly of Alabama
which is only slightly different than the Western
Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus). Another popular
state butterfly is the Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio
glaucas) which is the state butterfly of Delaware,
Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. Other Swallowtails
state butterflies are the Two-tailed Swallowtail
of Arizona, Spicebush Swallowtail of Mississippi,
the black Swallowtail of Oklahoma and the Oregon
Swallowtail for (you guessed it) Oregon.
The
Old World Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio machaon
Linnaeus) is very colorful with yellow, black,
blue and red in its beautiful wings. The
distinctive colors is what makes it stand out from
other sub-species of Swallowtail butterflies. In
Alaska and Canada you will find the Canadian Tiger
Swallowtail (Papilio glaucas) living along side
the Old World Swallowtail as they both overwinter
in this cold climate as pupaes (chrysalis). During
the flight part of their lifecycle, males patrol
mountaintops where they wait for the females to
show up. Old Worlds range throughout most of Alaska,
Canada, and are spotted in the lower
forty-eight states, especially West of Mississippi.
They also live through out most of Northern Europe
and parts of Asia. Some of the other sub-species
of Swallowtails include the Black Swallowtail (Papilio
polyxenes) and the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio
glaucus). Butterflies are given the name Swallowtails
when they have long "tails" on their
hind wings which look a bit like the long, pointed
tails of swallows (a bird).
Old world
Swallowtail and the Tiger Swallowtail butterflies
are not poisonous, but many females
(especially Southern sub-species) are much darker
and closely mimic the poisonous Pipevine butterfly
(Battus philenor). Animals that get enticed to
eat the Pipevine butterfly get very sick
and vomit (but generally do not die). These animals
tend remember that this brightly-colored butterfly
is what made them so very sick and will avoid all
butterflies with similar markings (including the
Old World Swallowtail) from then on.
