Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) dragonflies of the Family Libellulidae also know as King Skimmers or the Sunshine Skimmer which has a very distinctive wing pattern with a beautiful brownish-blue skimmer body with a black curved coloring pattern on their wings that extend over half the wing followed by a bluish-white to light-pink outer stripe with an occasional darkening at the wing-tips. The face (or head) are usually pale yellow or brown for juveniles and females, but the head darkens to black in mature males and ultimately turns to a powder blue later in life and has dark patches bordered with white on both wings. The density of male Widow Skimmer dragonflies increases dramatically during the breeding season. Widow Skimmers can be seen near ponds when mating. They will fly in tandem with the male grasping the female behind the eyes near the back of the head. After mating the male releases the female and hovers over her while she dips her abdomen onto the surface of the water to deposit eggs. Both sexes perch on vegetation in fields and open areas. From their perches located at the tip of grasses and wildflowers they fly up to capture prey. The females of the species rhythmically dip their abdomens to the water while flying just above the surface, unaccompanied, but occasionally guarded by a nearby male. Males may be seen regularly combating over territories. The Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) species are active fliers and inhabits most major stream and river systems, lakes, marshes, still bodies of water, including marshy ponds, creeks, streams, and borrow pits.
